Stiftung Warentest tested 12 knives in December 2014 – with first place being shared by two knives which received a rating of “excellent” 1.8 (9 from 10 points). By far the cheaper of the two is the “Forge” chef’s knife from Böker, Solingen. It was scored highly for its strength and the seamless joining of blade and handle.

The flat grinding makes the blades of the “Forge” series ideal for every day use. They are sharp and make clean cuts and also they’re sturdy enough for tough objects. Unlike lower-grade blades, the V-shape grind extends up the depth of the blade (instead of only a few millimetres along the cutting edge). As a result, you can cut effortlessly though the thickest or largest produce whether it is hard or soft. The serrated blade of the bread knife even cuts crusty bread into uniform slices without crushing it.

The solid end piece and tang ensure that the durable plastic has good weight. Because the handle and blade are joined seamlessly, there’s no gap to collect debris or crumbs. Hand wash.
