Icon of physics: Bohr’s atomic model as an artful designer mobile. Each item is unique.
Made by the Danish company Flensted Mobiles in cooperation with the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the atomic model.
In 1913 Danish physicist Niels Bohr combined the scientific knowledge of his time to produce a revolutionary atomic model which was a fundamental contribution to theoretical physics. In honour of the scientist, the model was called the Bohr atomic model. In 1922 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics.
A miracle of nature – beautifully designed.
The centre of the mobile is the atom with a diameter of 2cm (0.8"), made from wood covered with gold coloured paint. There are 5 open, extremely thin stainless steel strands, each featuring 2 balls (representing electrons) made from stainless steel with a diameter of 0.6cm (0.2"). Like the centre ball, they are held by an invisibly thin thread made from cotton/polyester. They continuously rotate around the centre – a sight of meditative calm and touchingly tender beauty. Just a draught will make the lightweight mobile move.
Individually made and balanced by hand.
Size: 27 x 27cm (10.6" x 10.6"). Weight: 14.5g (0.5 oz). Includes 1m (39.4") nylon suspension thread. Made in Denmark.
Danish family company Flensted has made extravagant mobiles for 62 years.
The mobile specialist has even collaborated with the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the New York Museum of Modern Art.
